6 Phases of Caregiving

There are 6 Stages or phases of Caregiving. These stages are not discrete and can have overlaps. The challenging nature of a terminal illness or a chronic condition is that some of the later stages or phases run in parallel and there are no fixed periods for any stage. The key, however, is the awareness of this journey and therefore a preparedness for it.

What type of a Caregiver are you?

Who you are as a person, your worldview, your experiences etc. play a significant role in how you navigate the role of a Caregiver. While there are certain social narratives around Caregiving, stereotypes about genders and expectations from relationships, the more we understand who we are, the better we can play the role of a caregiver.

Our overall wellbeing has various elements and given the overwhelming, stressful and traumatic circumstances of a caregiver, they are heightened in the case of a caregiver.

Symptoms of Caregiver Burnout

  • icon Withdrawing from your friends, family and other loved ones, getting isolated, letting your time being subsumed by your caregiving

  • icon Losing interest in activities you previously enjoyed – your hobbies, sports, friends etc.

  • icon Often feeling blue, defeated, hopeless and helpless, generally losing enthusiasm for life

  • icon Losing weight or noticeable changes in your appetite, headaches

  • icon Changed sleep patterns – erratic, less restful, mind churning all the time

  • icon Getting sick or more niggles like colds, fevers, cramps, backache etc., more frequently

  • icon Periodically feeling emotionally and physically exhausted, feeling trapped, thinking of disappearing or running away

  • icon Playing the "if only" games; saying over and over "If only this would happen." or "If only this hadn't happened."

  • icon Increased sugar consumption or alcohol/smoking/medicines or a desire to start again

  • icon Increasingly Irritable, restless or a gnawing discontent – losing temper more often, overreaction to incidents

  • icon High levels of fear or anxiety, impatience, not being able to laugh or feel joy

  • icon Reduction of consistency in empathy - Resenting, Neglecting or mistreating the care recipient

  • icon Inability to handle one or more problems or crises -wishing simply "to have the whole thing over with"
